Fire Drills

 Fire Drill Reglulations & Procedures

 

  1. Please prepare and post an evacuation route for your class (See VP for information.)
  2. Students must be wearing suitable footwear at all times so they are prepared to go outside.
  3. Classes will exit through the doors indicated on the evacuation route and proceed to the play pad on the west side of the school.  Students are not permitted to stop and pick up articles of clothing etc.  Teachers should take class lists with  them.  If the circumstances do not allow easy access to the class list, the teacher will proceed without it.  In case of a real emergency, the population of Dalhousie School will proceed to Acadia School.
  4. It is of the utmost importance that students exit in a quiet and orderly manner.  Fire Drills are simulation of a real emergency.  Students are required to to learn to respond as if there were danger of smoke inhalation.  Teacher are asked to assign door holders to hold the doors open until evacuation is complete.
  5. Each class is to have attendance taken to verify that all students present are accounted.  Once student from each class shall report the attendace to the secretary.
  6. Children who are with Educational Assistants or a support teacher are the responsibility of those individuals and should be taken to their homeroom teacher once outside the buiding.
  7. Elevators are not to be used during emergency evacuations.
  8. The librarian will supervise the exit of students from the library (main door).
  9. The Head Caretaker will check the washroom near the south main door.
  10. The Secretary will bring Master Class Lists, check  the offie and washrooms near the main (North) door and Grade 1 washrooms.
  11. At the end of the drill, students and staff will be directed by admin or designate to return to the buidling.

 

Reminders about Fire Drills

By their comportment, staff members model how children should behave in an emergency.

  1. Memorize your route from every teaching station you use.  Learn alternate routes as well.
  2. Bring registers (class lists).  Never leave your students.
  3. All doors in the building must be closed.  Be prepared by teaching students their door responsibilities and to stay alert during Fire Drills. 
  4. Never send a child to look for another child.  If need be, assign your class to another teacher when outside and then check for the child.
  5. Schools are required to hold a minimum of 10 fire drills per school year.
